Description:
Whitley Local History Group researches and records the history of Whitley and the surrounding area for the benefit of residents past and present and local schools and churches. The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month 7pm - 10pm at Hotel Ibis, Abbey Road, Whitley. Membership fee is £5.00 per annum (no concessions as most of our members are senior citizens). In addition there is a charge of £1 per meeting for expenses for visiting speakers. There is no charge for guests. Most months we have a visiting speaker, often from another local history group. For example John Russell of Willenhall LHG has given us talks on World War 2 Hostels, Coombe Abbey and the Gunpowder Plot. We have amassed a huge collection of photographs and these are often displayed at local schools, churches and the new community centre. Current projects include Whitley Heriatge Trail and War Memorial. Anyone interested in Whitley's history or local history in general is welcome. The President of the group is Councillor Hazel Noonan (024 7650 6318), Patron - Prof Carl Chin MBE and Chairperson - Ralph Butcher (Tel 024 7630 1740)
